[the blessing that is BO SANCHEZ]

i got these from the mail last month - complimentary copies of a book & a magazine which both came from BO SANCHEZ.

the book, AWAKEN THE HEALER IN YOU, will reveal to you  the "thieves that are stealing your health: the spiritual, emotional & chemical toxins in your body". in it you will know how you can empower the inner healer in you so that you can bounce back to good health. very timely reading matter since  fitness & wellness are so "current" these days.

the magazine,    K for KERYGMA, contains " inspiring real life stories & teaching articles to touch your heart & feed your mind & soul". a sure way to make you love & believe in Him more. the featured topic for august, which i got, is on overcoming life's hurdles & how you can "win your battles with trust & hope".

by the way, K magazine is just one of the many magazines of shepherd's voice publications. among them,

FISH, a "fun & cool magazine for the youth" with articles on the latest music, trivia, technology, fashion & more. two-time winner for BEST YOUTH MAGAZINE at the 2008-2009 catholic mass media awards;

ALL-STAR, a magazine for the tweeners-fr 10 - 13 y/o's; &

MUSTARD, a colorful & informative magazine for the "very young". BEST CHILDREN's MAGAZINE in the 30th catholic mass media awards.

if interested to subscribe, log on to kerygma's website store.

additional info on green roofs .

[green roofs]

an ordinance requiring all new buildings & housing constructions to have roof gardens is welcome news! the said green roof ordinance, authored by quezon city councilor, franz pumaren, is now being deliberated for third & final reading. once approved, "owners of newly constructed structures will be compelled to include in their plans at least 30 percent of the roof deck for plants and trees either with extensive or intensive soil layer."

according to Green Roofing Options - Buildipedia.com™, a roof garden is "one of the best ways to counteract an environmental phenomenon called urban heat island effect, in which the proximity of urban buildings makes cities several degrees warmer than rural areas." aside from highlighting the pros of having a green roof, the list of material requirements needed for constructing it is discussed further in the article.

although initial financial investment for green roofs  is rather steep, in the long run, the benefits far outweigh the cost. as mentioned in the article, "not only do green roofs help to combat urban heat island effect, they are energy-efficient and can be quite useful, particularly if they include vegetable
gardens and fruit trees.

here's how a green roof looks like :

i know market!market! mall has an organic vegetable rooftop garden,

ms cecille zamora blogged about her own version of a green roof @ chuvaness.com,

and  that both the makati & pasig city hall officials adopted the same in their own buildings.

may this "green" initiative carry over to other neighboring cities & municipalities nationwide.

[the green forum & manilacon 2011]

calling all green architecture advocates (architects, engineers,  builders, suppliers & people who love enough to preserve & take care of this planet)! this year's green forum, dubbed THE 8TH GREEN FORUM: THE COST AND CONS OF GOING GREEN, will be held on sept 2-3 at the SMX convention center, mall of asia complex.

manilacon 2011, of which GREEN FORUM is one of the activities,  is a 4-day construction show with exhibits showcasing  green & sustainable materials, a 2-day symposium on green & sustainable building design practices (GREEN FORUM), & a green architecture students symposium. i've attended the said event for 2 years now & i've benefited so much from all the information.

for those interested, click here  for registration & other details.

here are some of the pictures i took during last year's forum:

Ar Nathaniel Von Einsiedel answers questions from the attendees

pinoy organics.com

in this day & age when we hear stories of how cancer has taken the life of at least one family member, it makes us re-think of our present lifestyle & how it may put ourselves at high risk. it is no longer a secret that foods laced with preservatives & additives are all around us. i know of a family friend who lost his parents & 2 siblings to cancer all because they are into eating processed foods like tocino & longganisa, as most kapampangans are wont to do.  so, if you have a history of cancer in your family, it's best to adapt a healthier  lifestyle & the only way to do it is to go the organic way.

organic is defined by the Free Dictionary as "a substance, especially a fertilizer or pesticide, of animal or vegetable origin". it also connotes something that is "simple, healthful & close to nature". if you think about it, this was the original condition of the universe as God created it. but through the years, it somehow was altered  to adapt to the changing times though much to our disadvantage.

no worries though. many advocates of the organic movement are now within our midst. one of them is   pinoy organics. com, a company that goes beyond its being a "one-stop online resource". in their website, you will  learn about the basics of organics & green living,  the organic products to buy which were personally tested & recommended by the people behind the company, or the schedule of trade fairs & similar activities you can attend, among others. being into green architecture myself, i highly recommend that you start educating yourself & make a difference. click here  for all the details.

[dance with my father (luther vandross)]

This is a repost from my friendster blog "shades of peach". It's a tribute of sorts to my late dad, JOHNNY BAUTISTA. I told my hubby that its just so sad that dad's no longer around to see all his apos (grandchildren) all grown up, live in our new house and see the life I'm living now with my own family. And probably, mommy would be less lonely since life has never been the same for her without my dad...

I LOVE YOU, DAD! Thanks for all the love & sacrifices, though most of the times you hardly showed it. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! a big hug to you & to the BIG MAN up there with you.

dance with my father (luther vandross)
december 4, 2005 by shades-of-peach

back when i was a child, before life removed all the innocence
my father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me
and then spin me around ’til i fell asleep
then up the stairs he would carry me
and i knew for sure i was loved
chorus: if i could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
i’d play a song that would never, ever end
how i’d love, love, love
to dance with my father again
when i and my mother would disagree
to get my way, i would run from her to him
he’d make me laugh just to comfort me
then finally make me do just what my mama said
later that night when i was asleep
he left a dollar under my sheet
never dreamed that he would be gone from me

chorus: if i could steal another glance, one final step, one final dance with him
i’d play a song that would never, ever end
’cause i’d love, love, love
to dance with my father again.

sometimes i’d listen outside her door
and i hear how my mother cried for him
i pray for her even more than me
i know i’m praying for much too much
but could you send back the only man she loved
i know you don’t do it usually
but dear Lord she’s dying
to dance with my father again
every night i fall asleep and this is all i ever dream

I was listening to this song one night and it is with so much sadness that I remembered my late dad. It’s been five years since he left us after battling prostate cancer. My dad was the mild-mannered, kind-hearted father who was not into displays of affection but showed his love anyway by working hard to give us a good life and send us to the best schools. Because he never wanted to become an absentee father to his kids, he had to forego opportunities to work overseas but managed to work doubly hard just the same for our future. He was a worry-wart but somehow he balanced it with his good sense of humor. He was intelligent, having graduated summa-cum-laude in college. He had a good command of english, can turn simple letters into something extra-ordinary. He had wanted to be a journalist but was discouraged by his parents, and so, just made do with being a teacher. But he was able to make full use of his love for writing when he worked at a law firm. His boss had so much confidence in him that he was tasked to prepare all those legal papers, including correspondences, despite the fact that he was not even a lawyer! My dad was so much loved by everyone-family, friends and colleagues alike, and this we found out when many people visited him at home when he was seriously ill and during his wake.

It is true what they say that you can only know the value of a person when he is no longer around. I miss him so much especially when I am going through difficult times myself. I may have made mistakes in my personal life since he died, but I know that he would still be proud of me knowing that I've been strong, exerted best efforts to make things right even if it entailed a lot of sacrifices on my part. Many times, I would dream of him talking to me but always having that serene countenance. This alone comforts me that despite his untimely death, I know that he is in a much better place in heaven…

[food styling & photography anyone?]

i am an architect but i have always had other artistic leanings. make-up, styling, interior design, the list goes on. everything that will draw out all the creative juices in me, i get into. but if there's one thing that i haven't laid my hands on is photography. i have always thought of it as an "expensive" hobby. imagine, buying those dslr cams which somehow cost an arm and a leg! but when i began seeing the works of my college batchmates, ral & lambert, i somehow get green with envy because they are so talented! nature shots, portraits are common themes of photographers, professionals & hobbyists alike. what i really want to go into is food styling & food photography. i've seen beautiful shots in food mags & i want to someday do this since i've read somewhere that it pays well & there are still a few food stylists cum photographers around. i've browsed the internet for schedules of seminars but so far, nothing. does anyone know of a competent professional who holds seminars during weekends & the venue is in nearby ortigas or maybe within the vicinity of antipolo, cainta? =)

this book is from DELORES CLUSTER, an internationally known food stylist whose work has appeared in magazines, television, print advertising and feature films. she came here to hold  a seminar last november 2010 but i found the article about it a little too late so i missed the event. i wish there would be an upcoming seminar i can find & hopefully attend it.

[modern take on stairs]

i was browsing freshome.com and found this modern stair design-natural wood on top of a bare concrete landing. notice how the red door, white paint, wood flooring & modern furnitures blend well & create the minimalist look i have come to love incorporating in my house design.   got to have this on my next design project!

[sticky wall accent]

finally, i did it! i decided to put up the wall sticker i bought almost a year ago at japan home store at market! market!. i've seen it in various interior design mags & i came to love it! but back then, i wasn't sure if it would fit in our home. my initial predicament was where i would stick it on. i had 2 places to choose from : the main stairs wall or the hallway wall in between the fam area & the girls' bedrooms. i finally decided it would create more impact if it would be at the 2nd floor hallway wall because one could see it at once upon ascending the stairs. here's how it looks now :

the product name is POINT sticker & it costs only 200 bucks. i have 2 more stickers to put up in my girls' bedrooms. so excited on how it would turn out... ;)

[my best friend's wedding - a year after]

My best friend & her hubby are celebrating their 1st wedding anniversary on the 19th of this month. Being the matron of honor, I was tasked, nay, "forced" to give a speech, as what was expected of members of the entourage, especially those close to the couple. Speaking before an audience is not one of my "most-loved-things-to-do" but because she was like a sister to me, I gave in to her request.

So on your anniversary, Fleur & Alvin, I am posting, verbatim, what I said that night in Bellevue Hotel almost a year ago...

Just a few hours ago, Fleur, my soul sister & best friend of 6 years officially became Mrs Alvin Sombrero. as she was saying her vows to the man standing before her, I felt happy for she has finally found her match, her ‘hit’ after years of many ‘misses’.

I met fleur at the workplace in 2003. Fresh out of college & after passing the board exams, she applied at MDC & became my technical assistant. At first, she came on to me as “ maarte, sosyal & mukhang di tatagal sa trabaho. But looks proved to be deceiving. As the days passed, she turned out to be the opposite. Although di naman nabawasan ang kaartehan nya, she became a lot more than that. She was a valuable employee-efficient, hardworking & reliable. Our relationship went beyond work. We became each other’s rah-rah girl, shopping buddy & sometimes, salon or spa companion. And being her best friend for the last 6 years, I was witness to her chaotic, crazy lovelife. Her 2 previous relationships, of which I was privy to, were, to put it mildly, ‘unpredictable’. Although, she had her happy moments with them, there would be days that she would come to me crying because she just had a spat with her boyfriend. It became an ‘on-&-off’ thing that I got used to it. Knowing her to be emo & impulsive kapag in love, I considered it normal. But when the fights became serious and fits of depression set in, I was forced to tell her to just drop the relationship and find someone better. Stubborn and oblivious to my advice, she just stayed on. Until Alvin S came along. Fleur introduced him to me twice. Call it ‘best friend instinct’, but the second time I met him, I knew he was worth the chance for Fleur. After dilly-dallying and a major fight with an immediate ex, she finally budged and let Alvin S back to her life. Since then, life became a breeze for her, the smiles became constant & the tears came few and far between.I saw her become giddy like a schoolgirl again. And when she became engaged, there was no stopping her at happiness.

Who would have thought that after being separated by time & distance, she would end up with her first boyfriend? Its like “a bestfriend’s wedding”, with the happy twist. The bida girl ends up with the bida boy. I remember telling fleur back then that despite the pain of a failed relationship, she has no choice but to embrace it and allow GOD to let the right person come into her life. And much to my relief, she listened. And today, as they say it, the rest is history.

As I end this, I want to tell you, Alvin & Fleur that Julius & I hope & pray nothing but happiness for you. Remember though that marriage, like life, is not a mere destination nor a simple walk in the park. You have to constantly work on it. Love each other unconditionally, warts & all, but never fail to support & nurture each other. Because if you become better persons, you also become better partners & parents to your kids. And tomorrow, when you start your life as husband & wife, enjoy the journey together. Congratulations & best wishes.

[miss my yoga]

it's been 8 months since my last yoga session. you see, i cancelled my gym membership because i got sick last christmas and i felt it would only be a waste of money if i cannot hit the gym while i am sick but still pay for the monthly dues. now that i'm well again, i've been looking for venues that offer yoga sessions at a much lower, easy-on-the-pocket price. actually, i've seen one mini-gym near our home & they offer yoga on saturdays. but i have yet to try it. i've tried out their cardio-dance sessions & it's okay. what's good about this gym is that you only pay for the session you get to attend (@ php70/session), so at least you're free from anything that will tie you up but use less often.

a co-parent in school is now hatching the idea of getting a yoga instructor & hold classes at pinto gallery. looking forward to this one because the place is so conducive to yoga. i heard that pinto gallery is a nice place for dining, art-appreciation & meditation activities. for the meantime that the idea is merely that, an idea, i will just have to make do with storing my newly-bought yoga mat that i got from SM.

but i hope i can roll it out soon & kiss these darn excess pounds away...
