One of the perks of travelling is you get to taste local food. In our recent trip to Singapore, we have picked up on, relished & fancied some dishes & beverages in the many places we have dined in.
***ICE KACHANG or AIS KACANG
Akin to our local 'halo-halo', this is an ice-cold dessert which contains jelly, red beans (kachang), sweet corn & attap chee (palm seeds) & topped off with a mound of shaved ice, multi-colored syrups & condensed milk. It is served in either a tall glass or bowl.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT subtle sweetness, minimal toppings & the almost granular snow ice that melts in your mouth |
***FISH BALL NOODLE SOUP
A hearty bowl of delectable noodle soup with fish balls, veggies with sliced fried shallots & finely-chopped scallion/spring onions as toppings.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT flavorful soup base, freshly-made noodles & fish balls |
***OTAK-OTAK
The banana leaf-wrapped Peranakan (Straits-Chinese) specialty (topmost in picture) is a delightful snack consisting of fish mashed with a heady mix of coconut milk, chili paste, lemongrass & garlic.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT soft, mousse-like consistency, just-right spiciness |
A healthy drink similar to our OXRYD. Most of the bottled water sold in Singapore are of this kind.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT pure, unadulterated water, no aftertaste |
***ICE LEMON TEA (Yeo's)
A product of Malaysia, this ice lemon tea variety in a can is a refreshing drink.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT freshly-brewed tea flavor spiked with the right amount of lemon sweetness |
