This is the
butterfly chair,
a style of chair with a folding frame & a large cloth sling hung from the frames' highest points. This design is popular for portable recreational seating.
Also known as the BFK chair, named after the 3 designers from the ASTRAL Group - Antonio Bonet, Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy and Juan Kurchan, it was introduced by the designers at the 3rd Salon de Artistas Decoradores interior design exhibition in Buenos Aires in 1940. It was the furniture store,
Artek-Pascoe, Inc. which produced the chair from 1941 to 1948, sending royalties back to Argentina. Knoll Associates acquired U.S. production rights in the late 1940s and unsuccessfully pursued legal action against unauthorized copies, which continue to be produced to this day.
Here are some interiors showing the butterfly chair as an accent piece.
