[almost CHERRY BLOSSOMS]

Last year, I blogged about how I love cherry blossoms & that I wish we have them here in the country. But knowing that it's an impossibility, I dismissed the thought then. I totally forgot about it until last week when hubby told me that we need not go too far to experience seeing cherry blossom trees in full bloom. The resource speaker in a radio program he was listening to, mentioned these trees can be found in Palawan. So last night, I googled "cherry blossoms in Palawan" & look what I discovered!

The local 'cherry blossom tree' is called Palawan Cherry or  'Balayong'. The trees bloom from March to April. In Palawan, during this time of the year, a Balayong Festival is held to celebrate the season of bloom.

Although the balayong is not at all a close relative of the Japanese variety, it is said to be nearer in association with the legumes, or the likes of narra, camachile or ipil. It was named Palawan cherry because it resembles the pink flowers of the cherry blossom tree when in full bloom.

Here's a special tv news report on the Palawan cherry or balayong.

*I have yet to check this but in the official website of Manila Seedling Bank QC, Palawan Cherry trees are being sold there in 3 sizes. Prices range from Php 30 - Php 500. Might make a visit there soon. ;)
